Check out news.i90.org
So, I've gone live (with one day to spare) with a very rough first cut at a social news site. You can see it at news.i90.org. Post any bugs/suggestions to the comments on this post.
There are obviously a lot of things to be done before it could be promoted to the general public. I can think of a few right away:
There are obviously a lot of things to be done before it could be promoted to the general public. I can think of a few right away:
- I only spent 5 hours coding it - in a bar while drinking beer - and so there are going to be some nasty bugs.
- It, uh, isn't in Czech, which was kinda the whole point. Will need to sit down with a native speaker to get the site translated.
- The bookmarklet works well (drag it into your browser's toolbar) as long as the title of the site doesn't contain accented characters (e.g. Vondráčková). Will have to fix that.
- The graphics and page design are lame.
- There are no RSS/Atom feeds.
- The algorithm I use for determining what's 'popular' is very simplistic.
- The site requires JavaScript in the user's browser. Would be better if it would also work without JavaScript turned on.
- I have no idea if the site even works in Internet Explorer for Windows.
3 Comments:
Site does work in IE for Windows.
Most of the site is now translated into Czech.
An atom feed is available at http://cjn.cz/news/atom. I don't know if I'll bother to add RSS as well.
