Student suspended from high school in Kansas for speaking Spanish in the hallway

The Washington Post is reporting that a high school student in Kansas was suspended for speaking Spanish to another student in the hallway (the offensive sentence overheard by a teacher? "No problemo").

There has to be more to the story than that.

I'd like to think so, but if you read the article neither the principal nor the school district gave any alternative explanations for the suspension. Additionally, this is an article from a quite credible source (the Washington Post), one that can be expected to have done some research for the article.
