I quit smoking for 24 hours

From 2PM, Thursday, May 26, 2005 to 2:30PM Friday, May 27, 2005 I didn't smoke a single cigarette. I knew going into it that I wasn't going to quit completely - I wanted to see what 24 hours would feel like. This was the longest time in 10 years that I'd gone without smoking.

It wasn't really that hard to do, and I think I could have made it to the 72 hour mark (when all the nicotine would be out of my system). The problem is the complete lack of energy and lack of interest in working that one experiences in the first few days after quitting. I just couldn't bring myself to do some of the work that I wanted to do right now, so I went and bought a pack of cigarettes. That fixed my lethargic mood immediately.

I now know that I can quit if I can find a slow period when I can take off a few days or a week.

And how was it to quit for 24 hours? if one quits, is the first 24 hours the worst or does it get progressively harder over a period of days?

So what you’re saying is that you quit smoking, suffered nicotine withdrawal, and started smoking again to feel better?

Tell me you’re not surprised.

May be a plan to wean yourself off smoking SLOWLY is the right way to go.

Just a thought.

At least you got 24 hours in, not too bad:

When Smokers Quit - What Are the Benefits Over Time?

20 minutes after quitting: Your blood pressure drops to a level close to that before the last cigarette. The temperature of your hands and feet increases to normal.
(US Surgeon General's Report,1988, pp. 39, 202)

8 hours after quitting: The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.
(US Surgeon General's Report,1988, p. 202)

24 hours after quitting: Your chance of a heart attack decreases.
