Huge expansion to the shopping area near my mom's house

According to this article in the Osseo-Maple Grove Press, a new development called the Fountains at Arbor Lakes will open next year in Maple Grove. New retail space will be more than 750,000 square feet, which would make a pretty decent downtown by itself in a lot of cities.

The economy may go up and down, but Maple Grove just keeps on building.

It's pretty amazing how quickly the area is growing. Hotels seemed to be full (no idea why!) so I can understand the demand for the hotel component. The retail however, did not seem to be so busy so I am curious why they feel there is demand for more. Maybe the problem is actually that there is not enough retail now to make it a strong enough location and more retail would actually attract more shoppers and make the location stronger for everyone (i.e. more competition could actually be better for the existing shops).

It's counter-intuitive (that more retail will help existing retail), but I think you might be right.

Once they build up a critical mass of retail, making Maple Grove a "shopping destination", it should help everybody.

Of course, I live near Maple Grove, and would rather not see it overrun by shoppers.
